Reddit’s RSS Shutdown Makes Volunteers Pay the Migration Bill

Killing RSS is not the same as stopping AI scraping. It is stopping one standardized way to read Reddit—and asking everyone else to fit inside infrastructure Reddit controls.

That is the more consequential story behind [Reddit’s September 30 announcement](https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/1wubgvt/continuing_our_infrastructure_updates_whats/). The company cites commercial scraping and automated abuse. Those are real problems. But its response bundles three very different constituencies together: industrial data collectors, people reading feeds, and volunteers maintaining community tools.

Only one of those groups routinely signs commercial data agreements.

Two shutdowns, one narrowing doorway

RSS support ends November 13, 2026. Remaining public Data API access closes in March 2027, with no exact March date announced. This is a scheduled withdrawal, not an overnight disappearance of every bot.

The transition has several intermediate deadlines:

  • October 31: Reddit stops accepting new public API access requests.
  • November 30: Registration closes for migration bounty consideration.
  • January 12: API access starts closing for apps and users that have not registered or responded to outreach.

Reddit is directing community automation toward Devvit, its developer platform. More than 14,000 apps and bots have registered; DeltaBot, MagicEyeBot, and RemindMeBot are completed or near-complete migrations. Registration, however, is not a functioning replacement.

For RSS readers, the answer is harsher. Reddit recommends a Discord Relay app for moderation alerts, but explicitly offers no RSS replacement outside communities the user moderates.

Your feed reader did not suddenly become an AI training cluster. It still loses access.

A rewrite wearing a migration badge

Devvit is not the old API with a fresh token. Its [migration documentation](https://developers.reddit.com/docs/0.13/guides/migrate/public-api) describes event-based triggers, menu actions, interactive posts, Reddit-hosted storage, and app settings.

An externally hosted bot may need new execution logic, configuration, and persistence. Cross-subreddit communication, existing backends, incoming webhooks, and structured databases introduce additional compatibility questions. Some capabilities require coordination with Reddit or expanded allowlists.

That changes the developer’s job from maintain a useful tool to rebuild a useful tool within someone else’s application model.

Reddit is offering hosting, guidance, and a $1 million migration program. Selected eligible apps receive a one-time $1,000 payment after successful migration. Eligibility includes an invitation and an app existing before March 25, 2026; completion is due December 31, separate from the registration deadline.

A thousand dollars is welcome. It does not make volunteer time elastic.

The Elephant in the Room

Reddit sells negotiated access to the content whose public distribution it is restricting. Google announced its expanded partnership in February 2024; OpenAI followed in May.

Security and commercial incentives can coexist. Centralized access improves policy enforcement while making uncontrolled distribution less convenient for potential data customers.

Still, this is not an AI-licensing business replacing an advertising business. Reddit reported $805 million in Q2 2026 revenue, including $762 million from advertising and $43 million in “other revenue.” That latter category cannot simply be relabeled AI licensing.

The deeper commercial asset is control: over data distribution, automation, and where people consume Reddit.

The unpaid infrastructure underneath

In Reddit’s developer discussion, u/shiruken, describing tools used by r/science, said neither they nor fellow moderators had the time or energy to migrate existing bots and scripts.

That is the operational warning worth watching. A technically available migration path does not supply a maintainer.

The 2023 API dispute made external access expensive: Apollo creator Christian Selig estimated roughly $20 million in annual costs before closing the app. This transition goes further. Remaining public access gets an expiration date.

My judgment: Devvit is a defensible platform strategy, but sacrificing general-purpose RSS is an overbroad response that makes ordinary readers collateral damage. Its effect on abusive scraping is still unproven.

Reddit’s communities produce the content. Volunteers help keep it usable. Now those volunteers must rebuild part of that infrastructure on Reddit’s schedule—or let it disappear.
