What if every AI company is optimizing the wrong thing?

While OpenAI burns billions scaling transformers, Ben and Asher Spector just raised $180 million to prove the entire industry is flapping wings when they should be building jets. Their new lab, Flapping Airplanes, launched Wednesday with backing from Google Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Index Ventures at a $1.5 billion valuation.

The metaphor isn't subtle. Early aviation pioneers tried to mimic birds' flapping wings instead of understanding aerodynamics. Today's AI labs are doing the same thing—just adding more data and compute to transformer architectures instead of rethinking intelligence from first principles.

That's the core bet. While competitors fight over the last scraps of internet text, Flapping Airplanes wants to build models that learn like humans do—continuously, efficiently, without "ingesting half the internet."

The Post-Scaling World

Sequoia partner David Cahn calls this approach "countercultural." He's right. When everyone else chases short-term compute wins, betting 5-10 years on fundamental research breakthroughs feels almost reckless.

But the scaling paradigm has obvious limits:

  • There's only one internet worth of training data
  • Compute costs are exploding exponentially
  • Current LLMs can't learn continuously from experience

The timing feels deliberate. Even Andrej Karpathy and Richard Sutton have been critiquing AI's data inefficiency. Ex-OpenAI researcher Jerry Tworek is simultaneously raising $500M to $1B for his own data-efficient startup, Core Automation.

The Neo Lab Problem

Here's where I get skeptical.

Foundation Capital's Ash Garg warns that most "Neo Labs" will fail to overcome technical barriers. Being "a little better" than existing tech won't guarantee survival. He's probably right—this space is littered with well-funded research labs that never shipped.

The Spectors are positioning themselves as the "young person's AGI lab," offering PhD-like research independence. That sounds great for recruiting Stanford talent, but:

1. No product roadmap - They rate "Level Two on the trying-to-make-money scale"

2. Unproven founders - Ben is still a PhD student

3. Massive technical risk - Success requires 2-3 fundamental breakthroughs

4. Long timeline - 5-10 years before meaningful results

VCs are clearly betting on another OpenAI-style outcome. But OpenAI had the advantage of riding the transformer wave, not trying to invent the next one.

Hot Take

Flapping Airplanes will either revolutionize AI or become a very expensive cautionary tale. The $1.5B valuation assumes they'll crack data efficiency—a problem that has stumped researchers for decades.

But here's what makes me optimistic: they're solving the right problem. Data scarcity is real. Scaling is hitting walls. Someone needs to bet on post-transformer architectures.

The question isn't whether the scaling paradigm will eventually break down. It's whether two Stanford brothers can build the replacement before their $180 million runs out.

Smart money says probably not. But if they succeed, every other AI lab becomes obsolete overnight.

That's a bet worth taking.
